The International Code Council Dubai Office, in collaboration with Vortex Fire, are partnering to provide a virtual training on the 2018 International Building Code® (IBC®) Essentials course, tailored to safety professionals from the MENA region. Both entities are exchanging one another’s playbook of industry knowledge to create a unique user experience for building safety stakeholders seeking to learn more about the International Codes® (I-Codes®) based training and their applications in the MENA region. The course is a strong way to enable building safety professionals to enhance their professional skills, advance their career opportunities and benchmark their technical knowledge in a wide array of subjects related to building safety design and implementation.
Description
This course focuses on the basic concepts of the 2018 IBC. These concepts provide a basis for the correct utilization of the code. A clear understanding of the identified requirements allows the code user to apply the IBC in specific situations and helps to build an understanding of the intent of the code when asked to make a judgment on code compliance. This course will also help the code user correctly locate code requirements. It will also provide a basis for the correct use and application of the code as well as to begin to develop a procedure for applying them. It will address the organization of the code and how it relates to the IBC family of I-Codes.
Goal
The goal of this seminar is for participants to identify the critical concepts of the IBC regarding the applicable designs of commercial buildings requirements.

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be better able to:

- Describe the common provisions applicable to the design of commercial buildings
- Describe the use of passive and active fire protection

Jay Elbettar, P.E., C.B.O., LEED AP, CASp, CSP
Jay Elbettar is a past president of the International Code Council. He served on the State of California Hospital Safety Board and was the Vice-Chair of the Seismic Safety Commission. He is a licensed professional engineer in the states of California, Florida, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, Tennessee, and Georgia; holds a bachelor and master’s degree in civil and structural engineering, is a Certified Building Official, Building Inspector, Plans Examiner; a LEED-Accredited Professional, and holds many other certifications and honors. Elbettar was the recipient of the 2010 Gerald H. Jones Code Official of the Year Award from the International Code Council and is a California Building Officials Hall of Fame inductee and a lifetime honorary member.
Elbettar is a Code Council instructor and an expert code consultant in the building code, accessibility and sustainability. He was also an adjunct faculty member of Coastline Community College and provided training to engineers, plan reviewers and inspectors for the Department of Municipal Affairs, Abu Dhabi, and in Saudi Arabia on behalf of the Saudi Council of Engineers and the Saudi Building Code National Committee.
Tom J. Wood, Principal Fire Consultant
Tom Wood is a fire engineering professional with over 10 years of working experience and more than six years based in the Middle East. His experience has included work on airports, rail, commercial offices, residential buildings, malls, and warehouses.
He is an experienced fire consultant with a thorough knowledge of NFPA, SBC, IBC, EN and British codes and standards. He develops practical and cost-effective fire safety strategies and alternative fire engineered solutions using relevant guidance and presents these to authorities for final approval.
