SFPE Live Premium Webinar Series: Facades
Part 2: Façade Fire Safety – Comparison between Prescriptive and Performance based approaches in the UAE and Australia
Date: 2 June 2021 – 5:00 PM – 6:30PM UAE Time (9:00 AM – 10:30 AM ET)
In the last two decades, severe fires involving combustible facade systems have become more prevalent and have demonstrated the potential for rapid fire spread over multiple stories of very tall buildings. In most cases the extent of building damage from façade fire has been significant, and in a few cases there has been significant loss of life.
This webinar will be Part 2 of the SFPE Live Premium Webinar Series on Facades. It will compare the current approaches to addressing the risk from façade fires in a purely prescriptive building code environment namely the United Arab Emirates (UAE) versus performance-based building code such as Australia. It will outline benefits of each approach, key challenges, anecdotal practice and the way forward.
In many jurisdictions, the pendulum appears to have swung towards solid metal or non-combustible cladding under a prescriptive approach. The webinar will attempt to explore if a generic prescriptive approach is enough or a holistic performance approach evaluating the fire safety strategy for the building based on the latest fire test results is more appropriate. In Australia, a performance-based approach remains one of the preferred options to address existing building stock where certificates of compliance for recently installed ACP products have been withdrawn.
The webinar will examine a case study of a typical high-rise tower and façade fire safety requirements in context of a prescriptive and performance-based regulations in UAE and Australia respectively.
